We have come to the end of the regular season in college football, the final week of regular season fantasy match-ups, and Week 13 is on the horizon in the NFL but to be honest, my attention for right now is a bit drawn to golf. We just completed the highly anticipated Tiger-Phil showdown this past Friday and guess what we got coming up. Yep, it's a Tiger week. The Hero World Challenge will be played this week in the Bahamas which will be compromised of 18 of the best players in the world. It's safe to say that a little golf hard-on is going on right now so lets dive into The Match and Hero.
Last Friday marked the first ever Pay-Per-View 1-on-1 match between Phil Mickelson and the G.O.A.T. himself Tiger Woods. The golf world was set abuzz with excitement over this event following Thanksgiving but personally, I was not sold. In fact, I really didn't give two shits what happened. Yeah I bought it anyway because what the fuck else was I gonna do waiting for a 10pm flight back to the office but I still really was against the whole concept of this. Reason 1 being that Tiger has nothing to prove to the world. He is undoubtedly a better golfer and athlete than Phil Mickelson. 14 majors compared to 5. 80 Tour wins compared to 43. Tiger has owned real estate in Phil's head for 20 years so why does he need to go out there and beat him again? Where's the motivation? Tiger had nothing to lose here but Phil had everything to gain so it doesn't surprise me at all that Phil won. He wanted it more and for good reason. Reason 2 being that there were about 30 spectators. Really? Pack the place out. Imagine how much better this would have been if they had crowds like the Sunday at the PGA Championship where everyone is black out drunk screaming at the top of their lungs and hollering after every shot. It would have been electric and they could have done it but I guess MGM is too snobby to allow that kind of riff-raff on their fancy golf course. Reason 3 was the commentary. Charles Barkley? If you didn't know, I fucking hate that guy but at the same time I love him only when he's surrounded by the NBA on TNT crew so if they threw that aspect in there, it could've been better. Reason 4 was because I lost $22 to Vegas because I'm obviously going to bet on something like this. Like who wouldn't?
This week the Fall golf train chugs along to the Bahamas for the Hero. The tournament is hosted by the one and only and goes to benefit the TGR Foundation. Tiger playing is obviously the draw after missing a few years of his own event due to back problems. Is he going to win? Don't know and don't really care because it's silly season golf. I'm more interested in the threads he'll be rocking this week honestly. Big news is Jordan Spieth, the 2014 champion, will miss the event due to his honeymoon. Okay let's talk for a second. He got married sometime in the last few weeks or whenever so good for him but this is a mistake. The wife really can't deal with a week in the Bahamas and a free money grab even for coming in last place and THEN going on the honeymoon that could probably be financed by his performance in the tournament? I mean, money is no issue for him but still I would take a free paycheck and some time in the islands. Tough life it seems like, huh?
Anyways, before you know it we'll be done with football and golf will be in full swing again. Ha, get it? Also Christmas is coming which is a very exciting time for any golfer. You'll get that fresh, new pack of Pro-Vs, some shiny new spikes, and some new fits to add to the wardrobe when the weather finally turns. Maybe you'll even get a new club but not so fast because it'll be a solid 3 months at least before you get to use it. *Depending on where you live* So with that being said, cheers to all the golfers out there. What a shitty sport but it's one we all love. There's lots to look forward to on the horizon. Big things coming in 2019 so enjoy football while we have it and stay tuned.
Take a note.
